Card Player Magazine
Is this a good magazine? Never seen one, but thinking about subscribing to a poker magazine.

Re: Card Player Magazine
I've had it for the past year but don't really feel it's worth renewing. I prefer cash games and it seems heavily geared toward tournament players.

Re: Card Player Magazine
One thing about CardPlayer is that it does not seem available on the newsstand anymore. I have been to the three largest bookstore chains and none carry it anymore and have not for some time.
I play in a free bar league and one of the venues has arranged to get copies and so I pick up CardPlayer there. |

Re: Card Player Magazine
Well, I'm biased because I write for the magazine (book reviews in virtually every issue; occasional features), but I think it's better for poker players (as opposed to poker fans). Every issue has real, useful strategy pieces, from guys like Matt Lessinger, Barry Tanenbaum, Al Schoonmaker, and, most recently, John Vorhaus.
There is a fair amount of tournament coverage, but let's face it: reporting on cash games just isn't that interesting. Bluff has some good columnists, but they seem more concerned with the poker lifestyle (do you really care how Antonio Esfandiari parties?) than with the game itself. --Tim Peters |

Re: Card Player Magazine
Great that there is poker advice, but so much of it is bad that it seems like CP is adding articles to be prolific. While Bluff has fewer strat articles, they tend to be far better.
You can get both for free. One of the last articles that I read in CP had to do with how some no-name placed deep in a tourney by playing well. The article continued to state that he two outed with QQ, once with third pair, and once with vs a set. Great "playing." |

Re: Card Player Magazine
I consider Tim's column, due to the fact I seem to have become a collector of poker books, one of the best reasons to continue reading Card Player.

Re: Card Player Magazine
Sure it's good, but don't take my word for it. Just go to
http://www.cardplayer.com/magazine (current issue) http://www.cardplayer.com/magazine/archive (older issues) where you can read both the current and archived issues for free. I also think many casinos give them away for free as well. Also check out the rest of their website...very nice! Whoever said "Nothing good in life is free", was dead wrong. |

However, my first choice now would be Bluff. I feel like Bluff is geared more toward online players and that is my main course of action now. |
