considering how many people play the respective sports, MJ is an absolute no-brainer. i think anyone who DOMINATES soccer or basketball is more impressive than someone who dominates an individual sport for rich people.

Jordan's lead in this poll would be wider if Woods had not won today.

When they're all retired, Tiger will be on top. (This from a huge MJ and Lance fan)

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Individual sports it's just you and yourself and your mind. In team sports, if you don't bring it on one day, you always have your buddy on the bench to come pick up the slack. I always admired the greatest athletes in the individual sports...it is pretty much clear cut where the success is coming from.

Cycling is a team sport (based on your response above you seem to be lumping in golf and cycling here).

Cycling can be a purely individual sport, such as the World Championships or the Olympics.

And while you certainly rely on your team to win something like the Tour, the 2006 Tour winner is Floyd Landis, not Team Phonak. Lance Armstrong won 7 Tours, not Discovery/Postal. I know that people on the Discovery team say they're 7 time Tour champions, but the trophy says Lance Armstrong on it. The only complete and true team component to it is the team competition for time.

If you're going to make the argument that a team helping an individual to succeed makes something a team accomplishment, then you have to say that someone like the TD record set by Shaun Alexander is a team record as well. He wouldn't have been able to do that without his offensive line, good receivers taking away defenders and a capable quarterback to force the defense to give credit to the passing game.
