WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
My friend had the unfortunate experience of being sandwiched between Townsend and Sagstrom for Day 1 of the WSOPE ME. So much for Europe being a cake-walk. He's an excellent player, but here's a really tough spot that came up for him...been mulling it over w/ a couple players and can't decide on the best line. 100 BBs is a tad too much for me to like putting it in pre.
Blinds: 100-200 Hero: 20k Townsend: Big stack, lets say 60k. 3 limpers Hero raises to 1200 w/ Ako on button Hero has been raising a lot in position Townsend re-raises 2700 more to 3900 from the SB, limpers fold, laying Hero almost 2-1 on a call pre Call, fold, raise, or push and why? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hero decides to smooth-call Flop is TT2 rainbow Townsend checks Your play? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hero decides to check behind Turn is off-suit 4 Townsend leads out for 4k Your play? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hero folds. Lets say that if you called the river was a meaningless 2. Do you call a second shell on river? Do you push over a blocking-bet? Do you call a push if river is A/K? **Just want to say that I don't really agree w/ the way the hand was played out and Hero agrees it probably wasn't played optimally. Problem is....what IS the optimal play? I'm so torn here. Would really appreciate some good insight on this one. GLGL to everyone still in! |

Re: WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
Townsend is far from a nit. He's incredibly relentless and a thinking player (we all know that).
Therefore, given your position (or your friends) and the fact that there came along 3 limpers, who look weak, Townsend immediately believes that you are pretty wide with your raise preflop. Given that his 3 betting range opens up as he thinks you are trying to punish the limpers with any two cards. Preflop was the mistake in this hand. 4 bet all in. |

Re: WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
id get it in pre, and post flop seems ok, i might be tempted tho to do something stupid post flop.

Re: WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
I'm not really a fan of shoving 100BBs pre even in this situation. I think if you call pre you have to call turn tho. Calling pre and check/folding that board has to be spewy. I agree I'd be tempted to do something crazy on river like pushing over a blocking-bet on a blank river.

Re: WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
I definitely shove pre here against most people I consider to be better than me.

Re: WSOPE Hand vs Townsend
Any line other than shoving pre is a gigantic mistake.
