Cycle Trainers
I got into cycling a bit at the beginning of the summer and really am starting to enjoy it. So, I want to be able to continue to cycle if it's crappy weather / snowing or whatever. Does anybody own a cycle trainer, that converts your reg. bicycle into a stationary? Is their any advantage thes have over a regular stationary bike or am I better off just getting a traditional stationary?
Thanks for any advice/experience. |

Re: Cycle Trainers
Do you have a gym membership?
Does your gym have a "spinning" class or group cycle class? If so, do that. Usually a great workout. [ QUOTE ] Does anybody own a cycle trainer, that converts your reg. bicycle into a stationary? [/ QUOTE ] One of these or this. But this one takes a bit of getting used to... Or, you can get the right clothing for riding in most any weather. Oh, I ride all year round. jb |

Re: Cycle Trainers re:2
I swear by Gore Bike Wear! I ride in extremely cold weather!
http://www.gorebikewear.com/index2.html The Gore "Windstopper" line is simply unbelievable. Also, "Craft" and "Sugoi". Great stuff if you ride in the winter; for that matter, all year round. jb |

Re: Cycle Trainers re:2
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not opposed to riding in the cold and will probably ride occasionaly throughout the winter when I can, but I'm not hard core enough to want ride in snow.
I've never seen those rollers, they look pretty sweet. Do they offer any resistance? edit: oh...and I don't own a gym membership and I'm not too interested in getting one. |

Re: Cycle Trainers
I'd avoid rollers, unless you wanna get all gung ho with cycling. They are harder to learn to ride on, and there is the potential for accident (Ive seen people shoot across their living room cuz they rode off the roller). But its a much more realistic ride and is really great for your cadence and pedal stroke.
Personally, id just stick with a regular trainer, just get one from performance, I got a fluid one relatively cheap. I never use it tho because I couldnt stand riding it. I can do a 4 hour training ride outside with no problems, but after 40 mins on the stationary trainer im ready to blow my freaking brains out. Some people love it tho, they watch TV or talk on the phone or whatever, so maybe you'll like it. They will absolutely destroy your tires tho, so I'd buy some cheap ass $10 specials and use them for the winter months when you're on the trainer. |

Re: Cycle Trainers
Thanks Alobar. I'm really not going to get crazy into cycling (yet). just looking for something so I can ride 45 min to an hour 4 - 5 times a week to get a decent cardio workout so boredom isn't too big a deal. Good call on the tires to.
