WPT fourth quarter results have just come out. What is extremely interesting is that WPT did NOT reach an agreement with the Travel Channel for season 7 broadcast rights prior to the original option deadline of March 10. They have extended negotiations to April 1.
What is at issue here is money. They were unable to come to terms about what Travel will pay WPT for season 7 broadcast rights. As you can imagine, it does not bode well for WPT if they are dumped by Travel Channel. WPT viewership has dropped off quite alot over the past two years. WPT stock price has plunged from a high of over $24.35 on 7/8/05 to a current price of $4.37. With the number of online pokersite sponsors dropping like crazy post UIGEA, and the interest in poker decreasing, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the WPT over the next 2 to 3 years. |

There is also a lot more poker on TV, so you don't have to watch just this show. High Stakes Poker comes to mind. |

WPT would probably be a lot more watchable if it was produced like USPC, with all days being covered, and no stupid final table structure. Right now it just doesn't cut it, the show has no atmosphere and no build-up.

IMO the problem with the WPT is that it's just not interesting TV. High Stakes Poker is a much better show. Hopefully the producers of Poker After Dark are paying attention - the running commentary on HSP really adds to the show.
My point is that the WPT's declining ratings are certainly a function of the 2hr run time and tedious all-in races, one after the other, not just the UIGEA poker decline. |
