Roll the Bones: The History of Gambling
Has anyone read this yet? I saw it at Barnes and Nobles and almost picked it up. As a history teacher who loves to gamble, I could see this being a very enjoyable book. Anyone have a review?

Some one has to be first. With this book I think it may have to be you.

I saw this the other day, too...looks like a great book - but I don't want to judge it based on just a cover.

Re: Roll the Bones: The History of Gambling
I paged through it at B&N. It seems readable, if you're into cavement throwing bones, Pilgims having a lottery to fund their New World Adventure and yet more Bugsy Siegel Flamingo stories, etc.
Could be a good book to read when you are waiting for an airplane or stuck in traffic. Could also use it to fend off kidnappers, as it is as big as a phone book. |

I think I'll take a look at it and report back to y'all. I have some other books to finish up first, so it may be a few weeks.

Re: Roll the Bones: The History of Gambling
I just finished this book.
It is very readable but I have a problem with it. When I spot a half dozen mistakes I have to question the accuracy of everything the author says. A couple from towards the end: P 405: The author states that in blackjack the dealer is forced to draw to 17. The dealer is forced to draw to 16 and in most casinos a soft 17. p 414: The Binion's Horseshoe display did not have one million dollars in $100 bills. They were $10,000 notes. There were other problems I spotted with names and dates. - chaos |
