Preflop in a very lively game (simple?)...
10/20 w/half kill. Hero on button. Kill is posted UTG.
Uber-maniac just sat down three seats to the right (everyone knows he is an uber-maniac). Hijack is a young, aggressive, knowledgable (but not great) player -- he was a bit out-of-line before the uber-maniac sat down -- he moved over a seat to be on uber-maniac's left. UTG (kill) checks, folded to uber-maniac who raises (which means two cards in his hand), hijack(next to his left) 3-bets, CO folds, Hero (button) looks down at A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. Hero... |

Re: Preflop in a very lively game (simple?)...
couple questions:
- four or five bet cap? - is UTG going to fold for sure? to a 4bet? what about a 3bet? - is uber-maniac capable of folding ever here? mostly I lean towards popping it though. |

[/ QUOTE ] four bet cap. UTG is a question mark (passive not-so-good player -- certainly more likely to call two than three cold). uber-maniac will not fold pre-flop once he is already in the pot. never. He folds pre-flop about 20% of the time but only when the pot is raised before he has put any money into it. |

From your description of the hijack, it seems like he will know all about isolating maniacs, but not necessarily know that you know. I say pop it.

Cap it.
You're way ahead of the range Hijack could be isolating with. |

Moving on to the flop...
So maybe preflop was as easy as I thought it was.
Hero caps, Blinds & UTG fold, UM calls, Hijack calls. Flop (14SB): Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] UM checks, hijack checks, hero bets, UM raises, hijack 3-bets, hero ??? |

[/ QUOTE ] I'd call here, and evaluate all 3 options (raise, call, fold) depending on turn card and action |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that's what I did. Here is why: (1) I still gave very little credit to either of the other players. They may have a piece of this board, but it was just as likely that they wanted to test my continuation bet. (2) Given the action in the game and the size of the pot, I thought I would get a lot more information from the other two players bet (or non-bet) on the turn than if I just called behind. (3) If I just called the flop it was likely that either UM would cap it right here and, if not, likely that I would be facing at least one bet (possibly two) on the turn. Please tell me why I am wrong (because I probably am). |

Re: Moving on to the flop...
I don't think capping the flop is awful, but I'd like to see how the rest of the flop plays out and possibly be able to get in 2 bets on the turn. I don't think Maniac caps here with anything: right now all he's done is raise your cbet which could mean any number of things. He wasn't expecting a check-3bet and that should slow him down considerably.
This hand sucks when you call, he calls, he leads the blank turn and the semi-lag raises. But other than that, so far so good I think. |
