World Series of Poker entrants up or down this year?
any news on the number of entrants at this year's world series of poker? i figured with the law changes discouraging US internet players would seriously cut down the number of people qualifying via internet tourneys... and as a result, the world series of poker would have fewer entrants this year...but i understand per Cardplayer.com one of the first tourneys had a record for sign-ups...anyone heard different? i could not find any info elesewhere...
thanks... |

Re: World Series of Poker entrants up or down this year?
Only the ME should be affected by the UIGEA since most of the other events don't have too large of a % of internet satellite qualifiers. Those that make enough money on the internet to go to the WSOP likely realize they're not doing anything too illegal and have enough money to buy in directly to the preliminary events. The main event is where the casual donk usually satellite in and wouldn't be there otherwise. That'd prob take a huge hit.

Concur. I think that more people than ever that dig poker are going to play.
The notion of WSOP as a 6 week long gamblers' convention may be back. ME will be down a bit ... but anyone who can actually play poker hates the ME by now anyway. |

I'm sure I could look this up somewhere but I thought someone might know off hand. I'm just curious if this will be the first year in a long time (possibly ever?) where the attendance at the WSOP ME actually declined. |

Who knows, however, the WSOP is planning on 10K, an increase if about 1200 over last year, we shall see.
There is no real (other than fish) drop in internet poker (20%) but these I would attribute to the weekend guy / gal player who would depost 20 bucks, play and hope, there for some entertainment and to have fun trying to jerk others around for entertainment, not to really play the game. obg |

Wouldn't it be beneficial to us if WSOP attendance is down this year? Maybe the B&M casinos will realize that online poker actually brings them more business.

The place was packed on Monday Night
If the turnout for cash games and satellites is a barometer, along with field entries, then I may need to eat some crow.
At about 10:00 pm, during the break in the tournament, the room stayed packed with players lining up for Satellites and a very busy cash games section. I think the ME field wil still be down, but now think it will be around 5,000, not the 3,000 I had thought. One noticeable difference this year is the lack of online site hospitality suites. However, the players still seem to be there. |
