Default Rick Reilly moving to ESPN

Just heard about it on sportscenter. His articles will start appearing in ESPN The Magazine starting in June. I'll be switching from SI to ESPN The Mag just for him, I love this guy.

On the subject of magazines, and I guess you could throw in other print media like newspapers, there is a belief that these mediums are rapidly (and perhaps obviously) becoming obsolete due to the Internet.

That said, does anyone think there will still be a place for these long term (5, 10, 20 years)? And if so, how/why? (waiting situations such as a medical office, the barbers, and yes the washroom come to mind).

Nice. I always liked Rick Reilly more than most people on this forum. I don't get SI anymore but ESPN keeps coming even though I haven't paid for it in at least 3 years.

Magazines are suffering in general, yes. But there are some advantages to print, such as portability. Plus there is more permanence.

As long as SI keeps doing special editions for major sports championships, they'll still be able to keep people subscribing.

I don't think Reilly's leaving will impact the SI reader base at all. I'm sure for some his column is the first thing people flip to (years ago it was for me, but the shtick wore me out and now I only read it if the topic is of interest).

The bad news is, people going to ESPN seems to be a sign that they're starting to suck. So we'll see how this turns out.
