Default Deadwood Trip Report

tl;dr below:

I had no internet for the last two weeks and no poker. In order to fix the twitch developing in my left eye from poker withdrawal it was time for a road trip. Deadwood here I come. The drive was nothing special other then passing a group of 20 and 30 large coach motor homes on there way to a 1500 motor home rally in Gillette. Um ok? I did pass through Sundance Wyoming. It’s the place where the Sundance Kid got his name after spending 18 months in their jail. Kinda cool. I make a mental note to watch that movie again.

I finally made it into the Billboard Hills and on my way to Deadwood. The town is like a cross between Cripple Creek and Blackhawk. There are mostly little casinos, but there are a few larger ones. The first motel I tried was booked, but the manager/owner/housekeeper recommended the one across the street (cheapest in town), the Gold Country Inn. I grimace at the $70 fee get my actual key with room number on it. I find myself in a fully restored vintage 1970’s motel room complete with grey brown shag carpet, Zenith TV, and brown linoleum bathroom floor. Ok so it wasn’t restored. Sadly no mirrors on the ceiling. I grab the remote to turn on the TV and the air conditioner turns off. No TV remote or clock are to be found. In the clock’s place is an ashtray. So that’s what stinks in here. I thought it was stale hookers. (maybe it was) Since I figure the tables won’t be open for a bit, I try to grab a nap. No go, the highway is right outside my window and I am above the office where a dog likes to greet every damn person who walks in

With no sleep, I’m off to Cactus Jacks on the edge of town. It’s one of the bigger casinos in town. It’s about the size of the Isle of Capri in Blackhawk. I grab some food. Just a French Dip. I’m here to gamble, not dine. I head to the pokerroom/hallway. There are 4 poker tables that are poorly lit in the middle of the casino. Really its a piss poor room. Only one table going and there playing 3/25 spread limit. A bit to high for what I came with. I sign up for a 3/12 spread limit game. There are 8 people signed up and were all literally standing there and the poker room refused to start the game with less then 10. wtf. After about 10 minutes of that BS I head to the next room I heard about.

The Silverado. I sit down at a 3/12 spread limit game just forming with $300. We start 6 handed for the first half our or so. 3/12 is still a bit high for me, but everyone at the table is playing on the lower end of the spread. Game starts off fairly well for me. My first hand, AA. This could be a good or bad omen. Everyone seems to be a donator. I’m immediately up over $100. Then the table gets real tight on me with a couple guys betting $12 every street. I had heard about the spread limit games here, but I wasn’t read for such a spread. The table just doesn’t feel right, so I moved over to a 4/8 kill game just forming up about $20.

I see this table is going to be fun immediately. Mike the table ass is in the two seat. He’s got enough hot air to float over Mount Rushmore. I sit down and he immediately refers to me as Jamie Gold and lets the whole table know he thinks I look like him. Frankly that’s just hitting below the belt. 1 seat is his wife (tight passive), #3 seat is a guy who looks like Daniel Negreanu (tight non-thinking), seat 4 is a drunk Kid who tries to go all in with his stack on 3 occasions and really just sucks at poker and life, 5, 6, and 7 are old Man Frank, Suzanne, and Bill, all loose passive. To my left are Poker Alice in 9 and George in 10. Poker Alice looks like the real deadwood legend (cigar and everything) with picture right above his head.

The Silverado has a very well maintained and well lit poker room, but the dealers were inconsistent. Some had the kill spot post others didn’t. Some were also allowing Mike to show one of his cards when not heads up. Other then those minor things, decently hot cocktail waitresses and smoke free room make this a place I’d play again. The drink of choice he seems to be red bud, miller or coors. The red is tomato juice. I dunno, but half the guys were drinkin it. Easy Street Wheat is my choice and no red.

I start off 40 down at this table. Nothing real bad, just some missed boards. Mike is up and down but mostly up. Mike starts making light of the fact I haven’t played any hands. Mostly I’m card dead. “Common Jamie, play some hands, I’m going to take you down.” I just grin and go along with his charade. Mike has a easy to hear flaw, He has a tendency to get really loud with lousy holdings and quiet with the nuts. Fun hand number 1. I hold 57s in sb. 4 limpers, I limp in behind. 6 handed. Flop comes 57J. Checked to Mike who bets, 1 fold 3 callers, I raise BB folds. Turn comes 7. I bet, Mike raises and claims “I think I have you beat Jamie” I three bet. He calls “Well maybe not.” River is a rag. I bet, he raises “You can’t bluff me Jamie.” I three bet, he calls “Show me your bluff.” I gladly show my bluff He meakly shows his J6o

This sends him a bit tilty. His new goal is to take me out. I could hear him whispering he couldn’t believe I played 57s. I grin. Hand 2: Kill hand. The game is now 8/16. I limp behind with A9s on the button 4 or 5 handed. Flop comes 389. I have top pair, good kicker and a 4 flush. Mike bets all fold to me. I raise. He 3-bets. He gets loud again. I slow down anyway and call. Jack on the turn, he bets, I call. River is a nine. He gets loud again. I know I have him. He notices my submarine ball cap and says “Jamie you and your boat are going down.” I grin, “Its a submarine, its suppose to go down.” Table explodes. He checks, I bet, he raises, I announce raise before my mind could calculate exactly how much I actually had to bet. We hadn’t actually shoved chips in yet. Then it hits me, holy [censored] I just bet $48. He calls. Little knot builds in my stomach. He turns over 95. [censored] YEAH. I rake in massive pot. It takes me 3 hands to stack my chips because my hands are shaking so much. When I finally get up from the table, I’m up $418, busted Mike once and basically made him go quiet after his visit to the atm. God there is not a better feeling in poker then busting a jackass and having the table cheer you on. Righteousness.

I look over my shoulder the whole walk back to my motel room with $800 in pocket. The next day I did tourist thing, Wild Bill and Mount Rushmore. I did make it a point to stop at Fuddruckers on the way back. Damn good burgers.

tl;dr. Went to deadwood, played some poker won $418 and busted a jackass.

What was Wild Bill’s famous last hand??? (sure you know 4 cards, but what was the 5th. Two possible choices.)

Yep, not all that many people around here. It does make me wish they would hurry up and raise the limits in Co.

Not only is his kicker unknown, it's only a legend that he was holding Aces and Eights.

Good TR, though. I won't even get mad that you busted a guy named "Mike," 'cause he sounds like a giant flaming douche.

according to the sign within the saloon he was shot, there was one of two cards he could have held as the fifth.

One thing I forgot to mention about Deadwood that makes no friggin sense. They have parking meters in all public parking spaces. Why force your customers outside?
