Default Bankroll

Hi
I've used the 300xBB rule when playing fullgame poker. And never gone broke, now I have been playing sh games and bigger then my bankroll suggest. I'm now tired of going broke time to time, and is going to start use the bankroll "rule" again. If you play short handed games can you then have the same 300xBB rule or should I go for more?

Personally, I keep a minimum of 500BB as a cushion, and I'll probably increase that as I move up in levels.

400BB downswings tend to change your outlook on bankroll requirements. (fortunately, it came after a 300BB heater, so it didn't hurt my overall BR too much)

Just get a little more. Swings are brutal.

Its just more comforting to play with more. After 5000 hands at .5/1 Ive been up for 200 and now down to 60 BB (well, ok, I started with just about nothing).

So if you catch a ride to hell in the very beginning, its really awkward to play when you sometimes cant even bring the full buyin to every table. Affects your play (imho).

Ive seen quite a lot of posts advising 20 buy ins as the minimum needed befoe moving up. This is quite a lot more than 300bbs.
I realise that in the end it comes down to opinion but how can there be two such different opinions?

eg At .25/.5 NL the max buy in is $50.
This would be either $150 or $1000 depending on which advice you followed.

This is a massive difference.

I havent played 3-6 for well over a year now, so I might be inclined to say you always need 1000 BB min to play nay level and try to live off your winnings. This has become more appearant to me as of here late. I played over 200k hands at 5-10 until dec last year 4 tabling and carried a +2.1 winrate. I moved up and then basically over spent and over bet my BR foolishly and had to drop back to 5-10. So for the first 3 weeks of 10, I lost -750 BB, then in 2 weeks won +600 back now over the past 6 days went backwards another -400 BB. I know my game selection is so much better now as well as post flop is always improving, but I have been getting my butt kicked and it is very humbling and for the past month and a half has been a constant reminder of the my stupidity for not having a big enough roll when i over spent and still played 30-60 or so with only 300 BB. It humbles me because i am able to play productively in those upper levels and generate a profit for sure, but since my pride and bank roll managment got in the way and this new legis coming on, I may be forced to go back to work in time if they pass it as i wont have hundreds of thousands to use on down the road. Bottom line no less than 1000 BB and a wise friend uses this strategy he has 1000 BB for his current level and a backup of 300 BB for a smaller level so he doesnt need backed basically. This is my very humbling experience. Hopefully some of the other players here can learn from this and stay out of trouble.

thanks for all the posting, i always went with 200-250bb for sh/6max LHE. Playing with 500bb+ definatley has helped my tilt factor/confidence when im having a bad day or week.

20 buy-ins = recommended minimum for NL
300 BB = recommended minimum for limit
