Last weekend my great aunt died in her sleep. When my Mom told me about it she really stressed the "in her sleep part" and how lucky she was. I can remember my Dad telling me that my grandma years before she passed on had clearly stated that she wanted to go in her sleep. Personally, I'd lean more to the being awake side. In a sense I'd like to "acknowledge" my death. If you had to choose between dying in your sleep or awake, which would you pick? You will not be dying from disease or any unnatural causes (i.e, fires, drowning, gun battles with the cops, freezing, etc.) so they are a non-issue. It's just your time. So what do you go quietly into that good night or rage-rage against it?

My dad always said he wants to go out with a sixteen year old girl riding him. It kinda creeped me out when I was sixteen, but I can feel him now. Me, asleep plz.

I'm pretty sure that most people are unconscious when they die. I'm not sure if that counts as being asleep, but if I had to pick one then I'd pick being asleep.
