Patriots get caught with camera man taping NY Jets coaches playcalling
Article
By the time ESPN reports on this, the news coverage will be out of control. "The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game. The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets." |

Re: Patriots get caught with camera man taping NY Jets coaches playcal
this was reported earlier today on ESPN.
this story is like steroids - this type of cheating has been going on forever, and sometimes people get caught, but everyone (or lots of people) do it. in fact the Pats were accused of the same thing vs GB last year, and nothing came of it. anyways, I'm not sure it's a big deal, it's not much more than a guy sitting in the front few rows could get. It's not worse, for example, than pumping in sound when the other team has the ball, which the Colts were accused of. |

Does it really surprise anyone that Belichick would engage in this kind of behavior?

I cant remember wbich team, but in the Eagles vs Green Bay game there were side coaches actually holding up towels each time the defensive coordinator kept sending in play calls.

If all they were doing was focusing a camera on certain coaches then who cares. I'm sure this happens all the time.
Eavesdropping on radio signals is another matter though. |

I love that: "The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins."

It's just an arms race. Did it used to be OK to try to catch signals from your own sidelines, but cameras with zooms was another matter? I mean, I get what you're saying, but I don't really see how you make the distinction. Spying is spying. Teams employed radio communication with the QB/booth/etc partly due to convenience, and partly because it's harder to spy on. Maybe now teams need more security on their radio lines. |

[/ QUOTE ] Eagles coaches. And just to be a nit, it wasn't the defensive coordinator. The coordinator (Jim Johnson) calls in the plays to that guy (whoever he was) who then sends the signals into the defense. |
