Default Tennis Matches Fixed?

Doesn't seem like there is a lot of discussion of tennis betting here, but I thought this was quite interesting in the wake of the NBA scandal.

http://sport.guardian.co.uk/tennis/story/0

Looks like Davydenko tanked the match, and people in the know bet heavily on his opponent.

Seems to me that betting so much that the line became obviously unrealistic was a very stupid thing to do if that is indeed what happened.

Will be interesting to see what the investigation uncovers.

Yep, this is a problem and it's going to blow up in someone's face soon I predict.

Fascinating. Is it really as obvious as this guy claims?

"It has become increasingly obvious recently that there are a significant number of 'fixed' tennis matches being played. It is obvious to anyone with some experience of the normal Betfair market behaviour and the appropriate odds for a tennis match that certain low-level ATP matches are being fixed, with corresponding irrational market patterns."

The integrity of lesser tennis tourneys was a concern when I was offshore in 2001. This is nothing new. Many books who handle tennis action have added rules about making bets "no-action" if a player retires due to injury before, say, the end of the first set.

The only thing new about this story is that the book no-actioned a ton of bets after the match was complete, under circumstances that were not specifically spelled out in their rules.

...and don't let the wording of that last paragraph make you think that I disagree with how they handled it.

If you see the prices of the match it's obvious it was fixed. The thing I can't believe is just how obvious they make it.

Tomas Berdych speaks about it in an interview. Apparently some ex-mafia guy spoke to all the players earlier this year in Miami. Fascinating.

Q. Did you go to the talk that the Mafia boss gave in Miami?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Yeah, we were just sitting like you and he was talking to us, so I heard.

Q. What kind of stuff did he tell you?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Yeah, he was talking about all his life, what it happens to him, all these things with the bad things, with the peoples from Mafia. When they catch you, it's like no chance to get out, all these things, so...

Q. "Catch you," like if you get into debt to them?
TOMAS BERDYCH: No, imagine like if you have a situation that they gonna come to you and they give you the offer with money and tell you, If you lose this match, you gonna get whatever. You say, Okay, right, this is [censored] tournament, whatever, it's already the bad thing. It happens once, and they gonna come again another tournament and you're going to say, No, I don't want to do it, I'm going to play. Then the problem starts. So that's what I mean.

wow, Russian mafia (KGB?) got to Davydanko and told him to lose the match is my best guess. He retired with a "foot injury" and is playing the next week in Canada. Not much of an injury eh. haha

Davydenko is playing again today against another Russian, Youzhny. Sharp books (Pinny, Betfair) make Youzhny a small favourite, but square books may still rate Davy.

I can't believe how little damage seems to have been done by this disgraceful match-fixing incident.

Will Davy have his head in the game today? I, for one, doubt it.........
