Hawaii loses moderate points for hurricane threats and just general out-in-the-middle-of-nowhereness... still better than most states

Are you kidding? Hurricanes hit Hawaii every 20-30 years. I've lived in Hawaii in NY, NY should be like #1 or 2 worst states, no way in hell it ranks better than Hawaii.

NY sucks for so many reasons its not funny: Taxes are horrible, weather sucks, road system sucks, jobs suck unless you live in NYC.

You need to revise this list bad.

From someone who grew up in Hawaii(but has never been to Mass.), one dig at Hawaii seems quite fair. Hawaii is small and isolated, and it's very common for people from "The Mainland" to get cabin-fever there. They get antsy and long for the ability to change the scene by driving somewhere; but in Hawaii, wherever you go, you're still there. There's not a whole continent spread before you.

You'd have to experience it to know, but that takes a surprising amount of wind out of your lungs.

The fact of racial prejudice and violence against white people being widely accepted takes some more wind out of the sails of most of its visitors and residents too.

The hurricane threat is over-wrought. Lots of places have natural disasters/storms regularly. Tornados are scarier than typhoons(the tropical word for hurricanes) to me, after a lifetime to adulthood of growing up with typhoons. So are earthquakes, after 25 years of adulthood living with their threat in California. In fact, I miss typhoons, I honestly do! It's probably impossible to describe, or believe, how much. Nature seems alive and vibrant when it changes. If you're the religious type, God seems to clearly manifest himself. I'm not, so I don't know how to describe it.

Daryn - I've got nothing against Connecticut really (lived there for 4 years), so I guess saying it "sucks" is not fair. But putting it so high seems off to me. Some reasons off the top of my head:

-no major city (proximity to NYC doesn't really count for me, still a pain to get there, easier from No. Jersey)
-2nd highest property tax burden in the nation
-some of the poorest cities in the country
-crappy weather
