$220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
Hey guys,
People have asked me to post a HH or two and I think this was an excellent match at the Stars $220+10 turbos against a aggressive player. I am going to post the whole match. Constructive criticism is welcome. This also took me a really long time to post so I'm hoping people will take the time to respond in kind. For history, we had just played a game previously. My notes were that he was extremely aggressive preflop, kinda laggy post flop and was a liberal 3 and even 4-bettor. He floats a lot and tries to stab at pots on later streets. I posted the whole history because it's very difficult to get a feel for a match without seeing all the hands. Here it is: Hand 1 Poker Stars No Limit Holdem Tournament Blinds: t10/t20 2 players Converter Stack sizes: Gildwulf: t1500 BB: t1500 Pre-flop: (2 players) Gildwulf is SB with K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Gildwulf raises to t60, BB calls t40 (pot was t80). Re: $220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
Very nice post Gild, appreciate the time you took to post it!
I think the play looks nice, but hand 38 I'm not too hot about. You will pretty much never get called by any hand you have beat and you will never get any value out of a high A, while getting stacked by all hands that call you. So how about a check-raise all-in on that flop? It's a very good flop for you, and him being so aggressive I'd guess he figures you missed the flop most of the time and will bet out. That way you will actually get added value from hands that you do beat, while seeing the same results as now from the hands that beat you. I've actually gotta run now, but I'll return if I think of something else. Thanks again G! |

He's smart enough to take the free card here and I can't allow that in a pot this big. |

Re: $220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
Ah ok, ye if that's your read on him I guess that's fair!
Would you make the push with any two on the flop? How strong hand do you need to want to get more value out of the hand? |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a good question. Given that this opponent is willing to back off from aggression and senses weakness pretty well, I can’t really check this flop often without opening myself up to calling a push. (You should always be the guy putting your opponent to tough decisions in big pots, not the other way around). He also knows this flop hit my reraising range (high ace, a good pocket pair, high KXs, and some medium-strength hands like JTs and the occasional trash) square in the face, so I have good fold equity pushing a hand that missed a flop like KQ. He also has 900-ish left so if I bet smaller and he pushes into the pot it will be 600 for me to call, so I am committing myself anyways. Imo the only choice here is to push so yes I would push here with ‘any two’. |

Re: $220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
Hand 3 I dont overbet given the history from hand 1, 1/2 to PSB seems good here.
Hand 5 could go either way, hes going to have a lot of cards to bluff on the river and you would never slow play on this kind of board so your hand looks like a draw or very weak which should make it easy for him to bluff the river. Given that he didnt bet a nice card to bluff on the river I dont think hes thinking on a very high level and probably isnt paying attention to hand reading. Your read that he likes to stab at pots on later streets should be reinforced at this point. Hand 9 I think you played really well, reinforce that floating note. Hand 19 I dont think I raise given villain and recent history. Hand 21 seems very marginal to me unless you think hes pushing a lot of weaker kings, seems like your slightly behind the majority of his hands here. Hand 33 I dont c-bet this against a floater often and if I do its going to be much closer to a PSB than 1/2. Hand 34 Seems like a really good spot to mix it up, nice play. Hand 36 Minor point but I dont understand why you dont just pot 3-bet it, you seem to be discouraging action with a monster. Hand 37 I dont see much point in limping this except for 'momentum' or something. Hand 38 I like. Hand 40 Seems fine I dont have a great idea of his calling range tho. Hand 41 If your willing to call the push I think you should open push because by raising 4x all you seem to accomplish is opening up his pushing range which is bad for you. Open pushing is probably +EV but I think min raising would be better. Maybe you could explain your thoughts on this hand. Hand 43 A 2.5x or min raise seems good here. 3x Gives him a very nice pushing range and you cant call a push here. Hand 46 I think this emphasizes my point in hand 43. Hand 47 I limp or fold this. If you think you can raise this 3x here profitably you can raise any two cards which I dont think you can given your opponents aggressive preflop strategy. Hand 49 I dont limp this being suited isnt that valuable here and I dont call the pot sized flop bet because this is not that type of villain that lets you get to shwodown easily when your ahead, lots of overcards etc. I would call a 1/2 pot though. |

Re: $220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
I noticed you folded Ace rag OOP to a 3x raise, and then later called with K rag OOP to a 3x raise. What lead you to make that decision?
Also, hand 21 seems like a standard fold as I dont see him having much that you beat, and you only had 60 invested in the pot. Also thanks for posting this, it is nice to get a feel for the opponents at that level without actually having to put up $230. |

It just looks too checkraisable for a good opponent to bet, especially with his overcard-heavy range. I like betting 350 slightly more than shoving, as a good/aggro opponent isn't calling there like ever. Raising all in with 5-9 outs is a possibility though. If not, well just shove the turn. |

Re: $220 HU SNG: Case study vs Tough, aggro opponent
Very interesting match. And quite thought provoking for low (5s and 10s) grinder like me. There should be more >50$ HHs like this.
Two questions: - Hand #40 and #46 - you seemed to be shoving (PF) pretty light with K,rag. EV or metagame? Care to share your thought process behind this? - Hand #18 - you folded A4o to a raise from LAG. Is this always fold? What Ace,something is the minimum to be considered playable OOP? A8? A9? |
