Help settle a bet.
A friend and I made a bet about this.
Scenario A: Walking distance x Scenario B: Running distance x Which burns more total calories A or B? Which burns more total fat A or B? Please post reasons, evidence, or links. Thanks. |

The answer to both is A because it takes more time therefore when you including resting burn rate it burns far more.
If you only count calorie burn over resting it's B. Dunno about that fat nonsense cuz it's nonsense. |

The amount of work is (roughly) the same, so the amount of energy required is (roughly) the same.

OK. We made the OP as unbiased as possible, and the replies in this thread are some of the points we were arguing.
Like most of you, I do believe the difference is trivial (esp. for half a mile) So here's a slightly more direct version. Scenario A: Walking half a mile Scenario B: Running half a mile Which burns more total overall (working + rest) calories A or B? Which burns more total overall (working + rest) fat A or B? Please post reasons, evidence, or links. FWIW, the winner of the bet gets 10 drinks the next time we go out (somewhat ironic.) |

why dont you go do some research since its pretty clear no one is going to know exactly which one does more since its almost certainly disputed by 2-3 different schools of thought and exact data is probably impossible to get.

Calories = A (the + rest swings in favour of running, because your heart will burn extra calories in the time it takes to slow down from its running rate.) We had this discussion before and someone also made the argument that running is acutally farther because when you run, you travel a small upward distance with every stride, assuming that both your feet are off the ground for a short period during your stride.
Fat, Depends on heartrate during running vs walking. for fat burn, you are trying to hit say 60-65% of max. for 25 year old. I am gonna guess 210-age = 195 max 117-127. if Both your run takes you way over 127, and walk is way below 117 it makes it really hard to say. |

Running is less efficient so you'll burn more calories/mile, but it will take a shorter time so you'll burn fewer base metabolic rate calories. But overall the running burns more, and more fat.
Total difference is pretty trivial. Do neither, sprint 30 seconds, walk 30 seconds until you're done. Will burn way more calories although less fat during the run itself, but throughout the rest of the next day or two much more calories (fat included) will be spent repairing the damage to your muscles. omg why did I write this much about burning calories hychachahac. |
