Gambling against Residence Hall rules here...
I'm a freshman at UW-Madison and the handbook says:
"The exchange of money in gambling ventures is prohibited, including but not limited to penny poker, games of chance, betting on sports, and online gambling from the residence halls." Ok, great. I'm playing poker no matter what the handbook says. But the big problem is that I have a [censored] RA whos room is right below mine and she is SUPER NITTY about everything (noise, booze, herbal refreshments, etc.. and she checks rooms fairly often. I{'m positive that if she saw me playing poker she would report me. So what's my play here? I can only shut the door at night because its [censored] hot during the day. |

You're playing online right? On a laptop? Just turn the screen away from her if she ever walks in.
P.S. Make sure you know what your RA can and can't do. We all got written up last year because we opened the fridge (full of alcohol) when our RA asked to look inside, but it turns out we could have simply refused and he wouldn't have been able to do anything. Close the door when you play poker? I guess you just have to man up.
I am just glad I never had a crummy RA. |

RA walks in, sees you playing poker.
"Is that real money" You point at the tables and say "I have $400 on each table.. do you really think I would play with that much real money?! HAHAHAHA." RA feels stupid and leaves. |

Stream porn constantly so if/when your RA stops by you can just Alt + Tab over to that then do your best to act like you were jerking it. That should keep her from stopping by (or alternately keep here checking in more often).

I live in the Wisconsin dorms too. Last year I played poker online on many different sites and never had any problem with software detection or anything over the network. My RA saw me playing poker multiple times (the door was open, he walked by) and never cared.
Its nothing to worry about. What dorm are you in btw? |

"[...] and online gambling from the residence halls." [/ QUOTE ] How would they know? I ask because the student handbook at my university states that students have a right to privacy when it comes to Internet usage and e-mail, as long as they use their own machines and there's no reason to assume they're doing something illegal. I mean, I would think that if you're playing online behind a closed door, your TA isn't just going to barge on in. You should take that with a grain of salt, though; we had SNGs in the lounge every Saturday night in my freshman dorm, so I've never been in your position. |
