MLB guaranteed contracts
I live in So Cal and follow the Angels and Dodgers pretty regularly. I am sure most of you are all aware of the Gary Matthews "scandal", where his name came up on an internet sales list (or delivery list?) for purchasing HGH.
In reading the LA Times, it mentions options for Angels owner Arte Moreno, including: suspension w/ pay, suspension w/o pay, conversion of guaranteed contract to non-guaranteed contract. WTF? How come I have never heard of that? Is that type of thing at the owners discretion? It seems like there have been many situations where teams would have wanted to convert guaranteed to non-g'd contracts. Maybe Carl Pavano and the Yanks, or even the Dodgers and Gagne after he signed that 2 year extension. How about Mike Hampton? (I know these examples all involve injuries.) So does anyone understand this option decently? If so, please explain. |

link to scandal? never heard of it until now
That being said as an Angels fan, I hope they can void the Matthews contract. |

Re: MLB guaranteed contracts
I dont know exactly, but maybe they had some language in the contract such that if he was caught using steroids, etc. or some other rule violations they could void it? (or make some of the changes you mentioned)

Re: MLB guaranteed contracts
yellowdoyle,
Aren't there parts of the contract that prohibit certain things? I think Aaron Boone got his contract voided by the Yankees for pickup basketball? |

Re: MLB guaranteed contracts
Thremp,
I am sure there are items in his contract that could lead to it being voided. But the news articles I have read have made it all seem like a "general" option so to speak. They haven't said "if GMJ was indicted/convicted then the owner would have the option...." Besides at this point GMJ himself is not being investigated by any legal authorities. It seems the man is just looking into the pharmacy itself that "allegedly" supplied GMJ with the HGH. So I am under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that even without any "official" wrongdoing Arte Moreno may have the option to turn it non-g'd and then perhaps void it or do something else. I would prefer Willits over GMJ at this point, especially with the CF free agent class coming up. Besides, 5 years $50 million ugh. |

Reggie Willits [/ QUOTE ] PECOTA; Willits: .250/.329/.335, 3.1 WARP, $6.9m MORP Matthews: .274/.345/.429, 4.3 WARP, $10.975 MORP Common sense also works against Willits. He's 26, never been a top prospect, and has a whopping 58 big league plate appearences. Sorry. Try again. |
