My girlfriend just came into our room with a coupon book. There's a "Free log cabin getaway" coupon in it. The coupon looks like this:
FREE One Night Log Cabin Getaway Expires 12/31/07 Offer requires a complimentary amenities tour. I'm 99% positive this = 4 hours of listening to some salesman ramble on and then 1 more hour of saying no to him. I be correct? |

Just to mention: I have no intention of going to this. My girlfriend loves outdoorsy stuff and free [censored] though.

Doubtful it's 4 hours. I own a Marriott time share and my wife and I will sometimes do one of the presentations when they are offering decent swag (Marriott dollars, theme park tickets, etc.) We can usually get the presentation down to something less than 90 minutes by just letting our salesman know that we understand how time shares work and agree that they are great, but we just are not going to buy one today. The bigger outfits like Marriott and Hilton are fine if you do this. I'd guess some of the small time operators might be a bit more persistent.
I would never do one that only included a night stay. Get at least 3 nights (or Fri/Sat nights). |

It's certainly a scheme, but sometimes you will get a free 2-4 day vacation out of the deal.

Mikey-- Yes, this is a timeshare marketing "scheme". Although these presentations tend to be somewhat high pressure, they are still often times very +EV and likely worth your time. As long as you are relatively good with salesmen and realize that under no circumstances will you ever buy their product, you can often get a pretty good reward for a somewhat short amount of time spent.
Edit to add: Also, I remember someone posted a timeshare presentation TR a while back and ended up getting something really good for a reward. Anyone remember that? |
