Default Set mine w/ 88 in position?

Here's a common situation I'm unsure how to handle. Villain is 17/14/3.25 over 230 hands. I haven't noticed whether he 3-bets light or not, but I've been opening a lot preflop.

Do you set mine here?

Full Tilt Poker, $0.50/$1 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 5 Players
LeggoPoker Hand History Converter

Hero (CO): $99.50
BTN: $136.10
SB: $193.85
BB: $74.40
UTG: $129.60

Pre-Flop: 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] dealt to Hero (CO)
UTG folds, Hero raises to $3.50, BTN folds, SB raises to $12, BB folds, Hero ????

you can play on some flops where you don't hit sets too

Are you sure you understand what "float" means? If you flop an overpair and call/raise the c-bet, for example, you aren't floating.

I have no read on his 3-bet so I assume his range is weighted towards higher pairs (ok assumption?). So in my mind, it would be a float to see if he shuts down on the turn. Anyway, you know what I mean and this isn't a forum to argue semantics.

It depends entirely on your ability to play postflop.

when i asked about good flops to float i expected the answer to include at least a couple which contained and overcard.

Here is how I think it works,

X + P >= coC

X=Amount needed for +EV
P=Pot
co=Coefficient for set mining including set vs set, 9.5
C=Call

X + (BB + SB + Raise + Re-raise) >= 9.5(Call)
X + (1 + .5 + 3.5 + 11.5) >= 9.5(12-3.5)
X + 16.5 >= 9.5(8.5)
X >= 80.75 - 16.5
X >= 64.25

SV=Stack Villain
SH=Stack Hero
FP=Flop Pot, 25

If SV and SH are both >= X, you can call.

Whether or not you can achieve X is based off of the FP and the increments you, or your opponent, bets in. Judging from the PFP, I think you can get your money by the turn or at least by the river depending on your line. Just re-raising the flops gets you close, floating and then re-raising or betting the turn would exceed X against most villains.

If set mining is -EV, then you have to consider folding, 4Betting or All In. If you assume he doesn't have to be on a higher PP, then you should call and Re-raise his CBet.
