Jim Thome
Obviously he isn't going to keep this pace up nor is it for sure that he won't go into a huge slump later in the year, but was anyone expecting Jim Thome to be such a monster this first week of the season? As a Sox fan I was going to be happy with .260/.350/.480, but this hot start has me salivating. I'm kicking myself for letting him get away cheaply in a AL-only, auction-draft, keeper league.

Re: Jim Thome
I never expected 260/360/480. I figured it would be more like 260/350/540, but with no more than 400 ABs. Time will tell

Mikey,
As a Phillies fan, don't get your hopes up. I'll take Howard, thank you. Edit: That's not to say having Thome is bad. |

Re: Jim Thome
grd,
Neither can half our lineup; he fits right in. Again, I'm not trying to bash the Sox or Thome. Thome is a great guy and the Sox are a great team; just don't get your hopes up that Thome will keep this up, odds are he will be on the DL eventually. |

MAs a Phillies fan, don't get your hopes up. [/ QUOTE ] Sometimes I hate being a Philadelphia sports fan, having to constantly listen to silly comments like this. Thome had a bad year last year due to injury. It's pretty clear he's back to his 2004 form. You make it sound as if Sox fans should be expecting him to hit .210 the rest of the way as he did last year. |

Re: Jim Thome
260/350/480?? Ok, maybe I'm underestimating his injury or something, but how are you guys lowballign him that much? In 2004, he played 143 games and hit about .274/.396/.581, with 42 homers. The year before that, 159 games, .266/.385/.573 with 47 homers. He's not super old (He'll turn 36 this year), and I don't see why you guys are projecting such low numbers for him. Other than last year, he's played in at least 123 games (and usually a lot more than that) every year since 1994. I mean, yea, maybe he won't hit .300/.450/.670 with 50 homers like he did in 2002, but I think you guys are way underestimating him. I certainly wouldn't be surprised with a .270/.400/.550 season from him.

Re: Jim Thome
Sooga,
Because athletes with chronic back problems don't get better when they're 36, they get worse. Quickly. It is much more likely that his numbers will decline than go back to 2002-2004. He won't be 2005 bad, but he won't be 2002-2004 good. Homer, If you read my 2nd post, I told the Sox fans not to get their hopes up because in all likelyhood, Thome will spend time on the DL this year. Quite possibly a significant amount of time. Chrnonic back problems have a way of destroying athletes. There is no reason to suspect he is back to 2004 form after A WEEK. |
