I did raise (to 1.7 too small?) and he pushed, I folded. Was thinking that maybe I should have called since many cards could improve my hand on the turn. And by re-opeing the beting I missed out on that. New to NL, so his reasoning may be very off.

Your raise size is fine, but the standard should be to fold, and not float or raise. These plays should only be made with images and reads in mind and as an alternative to mucking.
