Default Quick Vegas Trip Report 10/13

Hey,
I made it to Vegas last Sat - Tues and played quite a bit of poker.
This was a trip with a friend who had a business conference so I stayed with him at The LV Hilton.

Saturday night we got in and Vegas was hopping. Checked in and headed over to meet a friend staying at Bally's. Watched the end of the Football games and NASCAR race then ate some dinner and I was off for my first session at Bellagio. I jumped into a 4/8 LHE game and won a bit and then got called for the only 8/16 going. Only one 8/16 on a Saturday night, Wow! It was a good game but I was seriously card dead and I went down then back up and finish it off with a full house holding AK on a AK8JK board and leave up $30 for the night.

Sunday
We wake up and hit the LV Hilton sports book and Theater and have a great time watching and betting all the games and even got to see the Vikes beat the Bears. This place may be a little older but it is a very nice sports book and a great place for an NFL Sunday. That night my friend turns in early and I'm off to Mirage to play. No 6/12 game and only one 10/20 game so I buy in for $600 to that. I ran really bad getting rivered by a straight after I 3 bet on the button with KK and sucked out on the river when I had JJ and the guy hit his second 7 on the river. The players were all old white guys and after 2 hours I couldn't really identify any really bad players and I just didn't like the vibe there so I walked to Wynn. No 8/16 game there either so I jump into a very loose/passive 4/8 game but again am card dead and don't ever really catch a great hand and leave after about 3 hours down like $150 so it was a rough night all around.

Monday
I woke up and headed out to Sahara for their 11AM NL Tourney. Only 60 runners and I doubled up on the fourth hand when I stacked a guy with my set of 5's vs his AJ on a AJ5 flop. I cruise to final table and we negotiate a 5 way chop and I take $360. It's not a great casino but the tourney was well run by the management and dealers there. I decide to walk down to Riviera and see what's happening in their poker room. I get into an entertaining 1/2 NL game with a lot of characters but can't ever really get anything going and quit after about 2 hours down like $50. My friend who isn't a poker player comes over and wants to try out 2/4 limit so I decide to sit with him and just get crazy drunk and have fun so I buy in for $500 and sit down right next to him and start ordering vodka/redbulls. I observe that the table is super loose/passive and nobody raises before the flop at all. I wait for about 2 rounds and just start betting/raising every hand and winning my share but loosing a lot as well. I had a great old time and tried to help my friend with advice and tips but he eventually lost his $50 and left but I played on and got very drunk and obnoxious which was fun to do because when I seriously play I never drink and barely say a word. Another funny thing is when I checked my money clip the next morning I had $560 so I actually won after I got drunk and stupid.

Overall I lost a bit but had a good time playing at all levels in many places. As has been noted by many on 2+2, Mid Limit seems very hit and miss right now in Las Vegas as I was unable to find much between 4/8 and 15/30 on my trip.

Thanks for the report.

It is sad to heard that the Mirage room was so bad. I really enjoy playing there, and I had the same experience when I was there last year. Could any locals comment on Porkchop's experience? Is the Mirage dead, or was it just a bad Sunday?

Thanks,

Doug

you go to Vegas and only play one short baby NL session?

That's like going to a hooker bar, talking to the girls and going home alone

Only? This is good for any AM tournament in town, especially on a checkout day like a Sunday or Monday. Most small rooms are LUCKY to get 3 tables, let alone twice that many. Of course, some people are convinced that every daily tournament in Vegas will have WSOP prelim numbers too I hear it all the time when ONLY 65 players show up and someone is upset that now there isn't enough money to play for to make them happy. Of course, some people never are happy.

Good report though

It's the slowest time of the year in Vegas now, it doesn't matter where you play. Your right, it's hit or miss right now whether you play 2/4 limit or 10/20 no limit. Glad you had a good time, but come back in any peak season and you won't believe the action.

Thanks for all responses.
DougL for some reason, and I really don't know what it is, I just don't like the Mirage. I had only played there once before so I decided to give it another chance this trip and I felt the same way.

BigBuffet what can I say I am a Minnesota limit boy and I don't really dig the NL so much. But I did like chopping in that tourney!

Photoc not unhappy with 60 at Sahara 11AM tourney just would have liked as many as possible. For others interested they say the 7PM is the most attended Sahara tourney each day followed by the 11PM and then 11AM so especailly on a Monday I wasn't unhappy with 60.

Bwiii I will be back next year for March Madness and then WSOP time which I know will be busy with plenty of action.
