12 man left in 24K guarantee - 3 bet all in short in blind battle
Villain is BigJohnDaly. He's a regular winner and is playing well, building his stack up from short by raising regularly from MP and LP; outplayed a donk for a huge pot, healthy again
I've been super nitty - I've been openraised to death and although I've had intentions to 3-bet with a wide range against MP2+ raisers, hands have been too terrible to do so (should this deter me in late game if I have a read?). So he knows this and may think I'm folding to cash. btw, 11th - 10th gets paid $340. 9th, $480. After that, prizes sky rocket up to $5K first prize. Average stack is $260K. UTG (298,432) CO (214,953) Button (327,234) BigJohn (385,400), SB Hero (154,430), BB (before blinds +antes) Blinds 10K/20K/2.5K (5 handed) Folds to BigJohn who raises to 55K, Hero pushes with A8o. I think it's standard, but I'm sure that BigJohn knows that he is committed to a push and he's JUST got his stack, so does this not tighten his range up to a point where considering that I can pushbot, the 3-bet is not great. Or does Bigjohn think that even if he's committed, the fact that I've been super tight gives him enough FE to make this play with a wide range anyway. Barry |

Re: 12 man left in 24K guarantee - 3 bet all in short in blind battle
Based on your description, I'd make the same play. Like you say, he's getting good odds to make the call, but your FE comes from your current image. He's obviously not laying down the best hands, but the fact that he has to call off 40% might make him fold some of the hands that you're behind. His raising range is probably any two cards and he just expects to pick up your big blind without resistance.

Re: 12 man left in 24K guarantee - 3 bet all in short in blind battle
I like it, although if he is good he would have had a plan here to call w atc, short of an all out steal, which is possible considering he does see you as a nit and the damage we do to his stack may give us FE, he's got an odd stack size to be calling atc. We are well ahead of his range either way, nice shove.
Hope you scored a good one Barry. |

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the responses, I was reluctant to post this because it felt so standard, though it illustrates things to remember: 1. Your image 2. A good opponent's raise and his plan 3. His range based on what he thinks about FE in a situation where he's going to be getting great odds to call if 3-bet. 4. Stack sizes and gray area (i.e., yes, he's getting great odds, but losing 100K would really hurt him). More notes for myself here, not a great example, but if it helps, so be it. |

Re: 12 man left in 24K guarantee - 3 bet all in short in blind battle
I understand the crux of your question, Barry, and I agree that there is more to this situation than meets the eye.
That said, I can't see getting away from A8 in a BvB with 7 BBs left, especially given your description of BJD. The only way I could even consider getting scared off here is if he had been openpushing from the SB regularly before this... in which case the fact that he didn't push here (which he should have) could indicate a better hand. But I doubt it. I think there's no way that a push is incorrect here. Matt |
