This is sooooo player/read/flow dependent.

I have made this call and folded in this spot.

With the information given, I don't think calling is bad, but it is certainly close.

Edit: I think it is really important what he thinks of your range after you call the preflop 3 bet. Do you call these light?

I thought that he put me on the kind of hand I have, a medium PP, maybe something like AQ. We hadn't tangled much afair and I really felt this overshove was weak. I was pretty confident that he wouldn't play a monster (55-66, QQ+) like this and thought he had either air or maybe a draw, although I think that he'd ether c/rAI or b/c a draw on this board.

He's def. not doing this with total garbage, once you are ahead it won't be with very much. I'd fold
