Default Flying to Australia?

I'm from Montreal and will be going to Sydney in January/February and I just started looking for some flights and it is pretty expensive.

For now, my best option is Air Canada at 2500$ CAD.

I'm now trying to get a cheap flight to somewhere in the US and get a flight to Sydney from there but it is even more expensive..

So if anyone from North-East America traveled to Australia and has some tips, please share! thanks

Try connecting at some place like Honolulu or Fuji. If you are flexible with the dates you can get a cheaper flight and have a nice little 3-4 day layover there.
