Should I take some shots?
So here is my general situation. I work full time, have a wife and a son. I make good money (over $100K per year). Lived in California for 10 years and sold our house there 2 years ago to move to North Carolina. The result is having a nice chunk of cash in the bank and a very small mortgage. My wife works too, so more income there.
I have about $1k in my online roll and have always treated my roll like I cannot replace it. I think it makes me play better pretending like what I have online is all that I will ever have to play with. I generally play $2-$10 MTTs on FTP with the occasional $24+2 sprinkled in for kicks. I also have taken a handful of shots at things like the Fifty-Fifty, the Turbo Hundo, etc. I also played one FTOPS event and cashed for a small profit. About once per year I'll go play a live event or two. I went deep in a $500 WPT event and a $1500 buy in WSOP event this summer, but did not cash. I cashed in one Circuit event. In general, I do well in the lower buy ins, make money and then will play a few bigger tourneys and when my bankroll starts to get low I go back to the low buy in events and grind it back up. SOOO....I've been thinking more and more about taking some shots at bigger online MTTs. What I am thinking about doing is dropping $3-5K into my FTP account and playing a bunch of bigger events ($50+ buy ins). At the end of the day I can afford to lose the money (though I'd perfer to win big with it, obv). But I feel like I have done pretty well playing withing my "imaginary" bankroll limit. I've half-heartedly tried to get some backing to play bigger events, but have never given it any real serious effort. What would you do in my shoes? Drop the money in and take some shots? Or keep playing low buy ins with just the occasional shot at bigger money? Maybe the fact that I am even asking means I'm not "mentally prepared" to jump up...but I'm just curious to see what others think. Feedback and request for more info/detail are appreciated. |

Re: Should I take some shots?
Yes to taking shots. However, only do that by playing sats that are within your bankroll to tournaments that are outside of your bankroll. By doing that, you will establish a frequency of playing those bigger tournaments that is more optimal than one decided by "I wanna play!", and you will play the bigger tournaments when you actually play well and/or run good (fact determined by your winning the ticket). Also, sats are good value in themselves, so just play tons of them.
Edit: I also found it better to take shots when drunk. There was less mental pressure. |

Re: Should I take some shots?
If you can afford it and want to take some bigger shots do it. The difference between the $50 and $20 isn't really that much.

Re: Should I take some shots?
This thread is resulting in two things:
(a) Boosting my confidence to take some shots at higher buy in tourneys. (b) Making me thirsty. |

Re: Should I take some shots?
Take some shots = play some of the $10,$30,$70,$100,$320 sats so you can enter the $215/$530/$1000/$2500ME.
you make a 100K a year...I think you'll be fine playing a $30 MTT instead of a $10. |
