Default play ring or go for it all

In october the world poker tour is coming to foxwoods and their bringing a 600 stud tourney. Now I got about 600 to play with. Should I save my money to enter into this tournament, or should i just continue with ring games at around 5/10 10/20 level? I am getting back to work as a teacher soon and will only be able to play maybe once a week. So i know the odds or winning are harder but is the reward (1st place 40K last year) worth it to just take a gamble?

Play the tourney. Play online tourneys to prepare for it if you can. Have your aces up cracked by small trips on 7th. Then assign your class 50 page papers on the Pelopenesian war. This will be even better if you are a math teacher.

Nice Greece reference, I'm actually a history teacher. I played a lot this summer, and I think cash games show a profit with less variance but over the long run. If you only get in like four sessions a month is it really worth it, or should you just take the chance with the big money playing one tourney and if you get lucky, you get lucky?

As far as in ct no, thats why I think i'm going to do it. Their weekly tourney on monday is a joke with maybe 30 players. But twice a year they get this one form the world poker tour and another for the foxwoods classic in march so I think i should enter for the sake of taking a chance. I mean I'm going to cool off and not risk losing the buying, last year first place took over 40K. If I was a no-limit player i wouldn't mind too much, throw a rock and you'll find a tourney but a good stud is so rare, that I think that is the reaso why I will wait and play this one.

$200 at CP in October.

Doc, ask yourself some questions:

1) Do you really think that you're +EV in this tournament?

2) How easy is it going to be to replace that $600? If peeling $200-300 off of your next paycheck to play $5/10 isn't that big of a deal, then I'd be more inclined to go for it.

3) If blowing your wad in this tournament will knock you out of action for a while, how much will that bother you?

Honestly, I think you're almost certainly better off sticking to cash games. That said, I'd probably go for the score.

What I would do is try and find someone who played stud tourney last time, they probably can tell you the quality of play. My guess is that some stud newbies might drop into the tourney and therefore make it a profitable venture. If you are not going to get many chances to play anyway, then certainly give the tourney a shot because you will get a new experience.

Read the stud section in SS1/SS2. The author has a story about playing HU against a guy on a diamond flush draw. His conclusion about his own actions applies to your question. Follow it.
