Default HU Tourney Question

My loosely-formed league wants to have a HU tourney. Pretty sure we could fill a 16 player tourney, but don't want to do a 32 player tourney. Anything in between requires that some players get a bye for the first round. Has anyone every played in a HU tourney with first-round byes? Seems very unfair to me to be one of the players without a first-round bye.

I have played one with byes. I think there were around 20 players and I happened to be one of the unlucky who did not get a bye. The tournament worked out okay but it is pretty unfair to have to win one more than the rest and I wouldn't play this structure again.

There are ways to have double elimination tournaments that are fair given a player count that is not 16 or 32. If you do a little digging you can probably find those formats.

You could always have those who dont get a bye paying half the buy in.

How about auctioning off the bye's. Put the extra money in the prize pool.

My group (www.nyhomepoker.com) is doing one next weekend. We also considered 24 players. But I was convinced that it wasn't worth the hassle and the unfairness of it. Unless there is a compelling reason to have more than 16 or less than 32 I would recommend not doing it.

You can auction off byes, or rank byes or give out random byes. Either way, it's unfair for a player to get a bye. especially if it's just a friendly home game.

here's a good site for information. http://www.homepokertourney.com/heads-up.htm
