What a Junior Gold Mining Companies

I read a financial site on the net that collects essays from a variety of people, on a variety of financial topics. I try to learn things from people who know more than me and have tracked a few of these writers for a couple of years. Today one of them said to buy junior gold stocks. What are they? Are there just regular gold stocks? Where would I learn which ones to buy? Does anyone have an opinion on this? Thank You in advance.
