Playing heads up tokes and time

I was down at the Borg this past weekend playing full ring 20/40. Soon enough as is often the case on Friday nights the games began to get shorthanded. 4 handed and eventually me and another man agreed to play headsup. (much to my delight)

The first half hour was free, the second they asked for 4 each, the third was free again, and the fourth they wanted money . Should I have asked for consistency or was I lucky to get free time at all.

Also, what do people do regarding tokes when it gets to headsup. Obviously I don't want to be tipping a ton everytime I raise and he folds, cause that would become significantly expensive.

Tip the dealer $10/down and get the other guy to do the same. 4/hour time is phenomenal, I wouldn't say a word about it.

Does the 20/40 at the Borgata really get quite that short on a summer weekend? I thought that game had at least two tables going almost all the time. Or was there another table going and they just let you two continue headsup?

$4/per half hour is amazing. My local casino rakes $2/pot when it gets shorthanded at high stakes.

We'll do short time on 6-handed only every other down, so that's not unusual.

I deal some shorthanded and heads up mid stakes from time to time. What's most important is that the players are friendly and helpful. It's a small thing not to be an a-hole in a cardroom, but it goes a long way. I like the idea of a flat $10 per player, but if you do that, do it at the beginning, and consider throwing in a few extra bucks at the end if the dealer was especially good (or off a huge pot).

But if you don't want to do that, just tip your standard rate most of the time, skipping the blind steals (unless there are many in a row). Don't give off the vibe that since you're winning more than half the pots you don't feel you need to tip every time, because the dealer is still working even more than in full games and you're getting a break on your table rental. As long as you're friendly and a normal toker, it should be okay. Remember, you want the good dealers to deal these games, so help make it worth their while. Nothing sucks more than a dried up grumpy mid-limit heads-up.
