more proof [I think] that boxing is corrupt
[ QUOTE ]
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) -- Evander Holyfield will replace Ruslan Chagaev in a bout against Sultan Ibragimov in Russia in October, six days before the former heavyweight champ's 45th birthday. Event organizers announced Thursday that Chagaev, the WBA heavyweight champion, was withdrawing because of unspecified medical reasons. He was scheduled to fight Ibragimov, the WBO champ, in an Oct. 13 unification bout at Khodynka Arena in Moscow. In his latest comeback attempt, Holyfield (42-8-2, 27 KOs) is seeking to earn a record fifth heavyweight title. The 32-year old Ibragimov, who will be fighting in his native country, is 21-0-1 with 17 KOs. [/ QUOTE ] What a surprise... boxing numbers are down. The Heavyweight division can barely sell out a High School auditorium... and all of the sudden a guy who has been working his whole life towards becoming a unified boxing world champ has to bow out so Hollyfield can get another shot. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching his fights when I was growing up... but I think this is a blatant PR stunt to get boxing back on center stage (I think they are getting crushed by UFC in pay-per-view numbers). Anyways, I hope Evander doesn't get hurt because some promoter found a way to make Ruslan Chagaev cancel. BTW... I wonder how much they paid Ruslan to have some "undisclosed medical problem" How much would someone have to pay you to give up your "dream". For me... it would be well into the millions. |

Boxing doesn't even pretend to have any other way of making fights happen or not.
Does the UFC have some kind of league or something where fights aren't made in private deals? Sumo does have organization, but there's still plenty of cheating. (Freakonomics) |

Boxing is suppose to have a legit contender / ranking system. |

[/ QUOTE ] More like how much would someone have to pay you to let them cut in line... BB, I agree with your assesment that this is staged for publicity, but the Chagaev dude isn't being paid to retire, just to wait a few more months. If this somehow does generate substantial interest in Boxing again (which I doubt), then Chagaev stands to make at least a little more money when his fight comes along. Especially if EH wins. |

Re: more proof [I think] that boxing is corrupt
This story doesn't interest me as much as the OP's apparent uncertainty about corruption in boxing.
OP welcome to 1903. |

I love that Larry Merchant can't even hide the disgrace in his voice over the current state of boxing.
