Default 0 grams trans fat per serving v. trans fat free

Maybe this doesn't belong in OOT, so if not, plz move and sorry.

I have a bone to pick. I've come close to cutting trans fat out of diet completely, which isn't as easy as you may think due to the fact that the [censored] ers sneak it in whereever they can.

In this search, I have come across a disturbing trend. Items that boast "zero grams trans fat per serving". Then I look at the ingredients and sho nuff, partially or fully hydrogenated poop is right in there.

I have a real issue with this. Are food companies just making the serving sizes smaller to mask the amount in trans fat in their products? Is it really that hard to just use something else??

The FDA regulates how much of an item has to be in each serving for it to be labeled. usually if its under 1% of your daily nutritional recommendation, they dont have to list it. How big is a serving?

I do eat fresh food. I rarely eat any of this crap anymore. I'm more just curious how they can get away with it. Seems pretty misleading.

basically the amount per serving is under half of one percent. should be fairly simple to look at the serving sizes, figure out how much you're going to eat and determine whether it's a non-trivial amount of transfat or not.

me, i eat what i want and crap where i please.

Guids,

I don't think there's a daily allowance of trans fats. I was under the impression that if it's under a gram, or some other measure, they can say it's trans fat-free.

Half a gram, actually. Then food manufacturers can round it down to zero, at least in the US. In Canada, the numbers go down to a fifth of a gram.

I am pretty sure that there is no daily allowance of trans fat other than "as little as possible."
