I never ever buy insurance, but my friend told me that x-box had had some problems and it was probably a good idea here. I ended up getting the three rings of death too. I brought it back, they gave me a refurbed one that also had three rings of death. Brought that one back and they gave me ANOTHER one with it! (No, not the one I gave them the first time.) Then they gave me a new one. This is completely irrelevant though. Three rings of death = ship it out and pay the unfriendly shipping fee. (Edit: if you're still under warranty (one year from purchase?), the fixing is free; you just pay shipping.) (Call number first obviously.)

MS expanded the default warranty to 3 years. If you need a repair/replacement they ship you a postmarked box to package it in. You pay $0.

Microsoft extended their warranty to three years. So just call them, they'll go through basic troubleshooting and then send you the coffin (box with pre-paid postage).

The now expanded 3 year warranty covers shipping and takes about 6-7 business days.

Did you have to show your proof of receipt? When I called everything seemed fine (no mention of receipt) and they said the empty box was on its way.

You claiming you have to pay shipping, or any cost at all, makes your whole story impossible to believe. When you call to get it fixed they ship you a box to send it to them, they don't just give you an address and tell you to go down to UPS and pay to ship it to them. Nice story though.
