Default Noob question: should you always pot preflop when you play the button?

Just wondering if it makes sense to raise the pot on a six-max table on the button when everyone earlier has limped, when you have a playable hand. Sorry if this a super-obvious thing to do, but I'd not been doing it automatically and am just trying it now. I'm not saying repot if there's been a raise already - that depends of course on your hand! - but when everyone's limped. If a limper comes over the top, you can decide what to do with the benefit of knowing you'll have position on him.

Just go all-in. Put your opponent to the test for all his chips.

You received a flipant answer.

It's somewhat situational dependant. Have you observed the opposition limping with big hands? Are you in a school of <@(()))><. How deep is your stack relative to the opposition?

If you do this in some sort of consistant pattern, you will set yourself up for some big surprises.

If you are truely new to PLO, strick "always" & "never" from your vocabulary (especially when you post to the forum).

Okay... we've all played against the "If I'm playing it, I'm potting it" preflop types and they're very easy to trap, great to have at a table.

I'd raise from that position with a pretty wide range of holdings actually. Its sort of a squeeze play. Read on the UTG limper is important though. With these sort of limp fests preflop, if you repot it and now the utg limper has a hard time calling, but if he assumes others are coming along he calls, then it just goes call call call and thats not what you usually want.

Without a strong hand that is going to play well multi way (double suited connectors) then I would only pot from this position if Im almost certain the UTG limper (or the blinds) won't cold call with semi weak hands.

I'd raise the button to 3x the blinds with a hell of a lot of hands.

I've been potting with 89TJ type hands from this position as a matter of routine... high pairs, not so much. Also trying it with some lower rundown hands, since it builds up a large pot for if I hit, and it's simple to get away from if I miss.

This month's 2+2 magazine article on the importance of position in PLO is relevant here, of course:

without fear of being limp-reraised, potting any hand that is more than marginally playable on the button is pretty much axiomatically correct. the danger of being limp-reraised means you should somewhat disfavor hands that are dominated by aces. raising only 3x bb is unnecessary weak sauce.
