Portable air conditioners
My house air conditioner tends to work ok, it cools the downstairs area pretty well. But the upstairs (my bedroom and office) still can be stuffy and hot. I don't need anything heavy duty, just something to keep the temperature down a bit. Fans are ok but I'd prefer the subtleties of an air conditioner as opposed to a fan blowing air at me.
The problem is all the reviews I've seen range from really good to really bad and I'm not sure what to believe. I'd be willing to spend $300-400 but ideally the cheaper the better as long as it performs well. Like I said I'm not into anything heavy duty, just something that gets the job done. Also I don't like them to be overly noisy. Can anybody give me some advice on some good ones to buy or experiences with different ones? Thanks. |

Re: Portable air conditioners
Personally for the money, I don't think that you can beat a wall unit here. For a decent sized one it will only set you back like 150 max, and you would be amazed at the cooling power these lil things have.
My house that I am living at right now with my friend is 5400sq ft, and is a single story house, so as you can imagine it takes the two air units running all the time to keep it cool in the So. Cal summer. So rather than killing the electricity bill I picked up a Portable roll around for my bedroom, and a wall unit for the office. Wall unit $140, portable $499, and the wall unit blows away the portable. If interested, I'll check the models out tomorrow in the am |

Re: Portable air conditioners
something like that, the house was owned by some cheesy B movie director, and he expanded it in the 70's so he could throw parties for his movies.
What started as a 3 bed 2 bath house on a 1 1/2 acre lot became an 7 bed 5 bath, with a great room that is like 1400 sq ft by itself. I'll post some pics tomorrow, of the before with his awesome 70's porn director motif, and what we did after to update the place. |

I just did a search on "wall unit air conditioner" and it seemed like everything was in the $400+ range although the reviews were great. |

Re: Portable air conditioners
portable ac's that you drag around with window exhaust port?
i bought one of those and it is terrible. the plastic piping that attaches to the window, creates so much heat that the ac spins non stop. these ac's are for basements and other locations where wall mounted ac's are not a possible option. |

Re: Portable air conditioners
By wall mounted you guys mean ones that go into windows right?
I would also be very interested in hearing reviews of these units.. I think I will want to get one for my apartment in Chicago when I move in in the fall. |

Re: Portable air conditioners
i have a basic window unit, haier brand, cost about 200 w years ago, cools the two bedrooms in the apartment very well and we just keep the door closed to the rest of the apt so it's only those two rooms. i don't think it would keep the whole place cool but i've never tried.

Re: Portable air conditioners
(Kramer enters the apartment with the air conditioner in his arms)
KRAMER: Commando 8 has arrived! JERRY: Take it to the window. KRAMER: 12.000 BTU's of raw cooling power. (Kramer places the air conditioner in the window) Installed! GEORGE: That's it? You don't have to screw it in or anything? KRAMER: No, just plug it in and the Commando 8 does the rest. (And to Jerry I'll seal that up later, right? |
