Hafner and Indians agree to $57M, four-year extension
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/s...=ESPNHeadlines
[ QUOTE ] CLEVELAND -- Travis Hafner and the Cleveland Indians agreed Thursday to a $57 million, four-year contract extension through the 2012 season. Hafner, the Indians' designated hitter, was making $3.95 million this year and Cleveland had a 2008 option for a minimum $4.95 million. Under the new deal, he will receive more money next year. The new agreement includes a team option for 2013. "Not only is Travis Hafner among the elite hitters in major league baseball today, but he will now have the opportunity to establish himself as one of the great players in the proud history of the Cleveland Indians organization," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. "This contract is both a credit to Travis's offensive performance and a testament to who he is as a teammate, his relentless work ethic and his strong desire to help bring a championship to Cleveland." [ QUOTE ]
this is an awesome, awesome deal for the Indians [/ QUOTE ] As long as this doesn't inhibit their ability to re-sign CC to a new deal, I agree with you. The FO desperately needed to finally sign their current stars to a long-term big money deal. The Sizemore deal (although awesome), Westbrook deal, and Lee deal don't count because they were either not big money, not a big star, or given to a player during his arb years. The money coming to CC is going to be scary, especially if he keeps tearing it up. He should get significantly more than Zito. |

[/ QUOTE ] Shapiro learned from the man who invented signing people through their arbitration year, John Hart. There's almost no chance we can re-sign Sabathia, even with this Hafner signing. Furthermore, it's probably not worth the money, considering Jason Stanford and Adam Miller are both probably big league ready. |
