Value in sattlilites and tournament entry chips

What is the value of satellites and TECs? Lets say you play a $20 10 person sattelite where you can win a 200$ seat in a bigger tourny. Why not just play a normal tournament and win the money as cold hard cash then decide if you want to buy the seat. ALso I play at UB and they have this thing called tournament entry chips where basically you pay real money to win money that is only usable for tournaments.
This all seems like a gift card. AS in I would rather be given $20 to spend anywhere rather than $20 i can only spend in starbucks.
