top pair in a family pot
SB recently slowplayed KK in a BvB battle with me. Otherwise, no strong reads.
PokerStars 0.25/0.50 Hold'em (6 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums) Preflop: Hero is BB with 8[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. Final Pot: 11.50 BB ---------- Is TPGK good enough to win a pot like frequently? The check-raise made me feel that I was drawing dead. Should I have folded this at any time? |

Re: top pair in a family pot
If you're gonna continue (which you should imho) I'd 3bet this flop.

Re: top pair in a family pot
Id have 3 bet the flop, but having failed that i think its a definate turn raise. what hands are you drawing dead to on this flop ? theres no reason to fear the flop raise hes more likley to be builing a big pot with a draw here than anything else

Basically to fold out flush draws. My ? is what if SB b/3b? Fold? |

Re: top pair in a family pot
jr4284, You're not 3 betting the flop/raising the turn to fold out FDs. You're doing it to protect your TPGK vs overcards to your 8. This seems to me to be a hand out of Ed Miller's SSHE. The pot is good sized and you've got a hand that could very well be best but it's very vulnerable. A 3 bet on the flop will often buy you some outs here.
If SB b/3b then I call the flop. Whether I call down or not probably depends on if it's hu or mw. HU I think I call down. I think that often times villain will overplay draws in these spots. |

Re: top pair in a family pot
I think the choice is between 3-betting the flop and calling the flop to raise a safe turn card. With a hand this vulnerable and a board this drawy I think I'd go with a turn raise.

Re: top pair in a family pot
Anyways, my top pair held up as villain ended up having AQ.
He was stacked shortly afterwards. |

Re: top pair in a family pot
Raise turn check river...
I dont like re-raising the flop because there are so many strong draws for your opponents to have to a) play back at you b) continue your equity is not very good after he check-raises the field like taht.. Generally means flush draw or monster. So, you'll be bloating the pot with a tiny/non-existant equity edge, that can swing violently depending on the next card. By waiting to raise the turn , you got a a better feel for where your at, and it allows you to ditch your hand on a very bad card if you choose to. It also minimizes the chance you get played back at, so you can often safely fold to a 3-bet. You'll also likely fold out hands like JT which have odds to continue for 2 bets knowing your hand, but will likely fold given the action.. Maybe even flush draws since the board is paired. |
