Default My baby horse died

The baby horse featured in this thread:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...ue#Post10543472
Died two weeks ago. She was 23 days old.

She was out playing with two other foals, and got kicked in the hind leg by one and destroyed her leg. The bone appeared in xrays to be almost through the skin, but it was the deceptively clean fracture near the growth plate that sealed her fate. Nothing could be done, no plate, no screws, not even a cast.

I held her while they put her down. I kissed her beautiful little face one last time and told her how sorry I was and how much I loved her.

I miss her so much. This is the most horrible experience I've ever been through. I waited two years for the baby, and while her mom was pregnant I went to the vet and saw her beating heart, felt her kicking her moms sides. I helped her take her first steps. I taught her to lead and pick up her feet and be a good girl. And I held her while she died.

Rest in peace Kylie.

Sorry to hear that.

I've never understood the how's and why's of horses having their legs injured meaning death for them.

A variety of reasons.

First, they can't be immobilized long term, they are horses. They also have bad blood flow and it's very difficult to heal properly. Also, they will favor that side, which messes with their other legs as well as their internals. There are many infections and other things that are very difficlt to stave of.

Look at Barbaro, who they spent millions on to try and save, but it still wasn't enough.
