Default What\'s up with a toothache?

I've had a toothache for like 2 weeks and I figure I need a root canal?

Is this most likely?

and how bad do they suck?

I am in Japan, and will have to pay for it myself, and it will probably be about 150% to 200% the price of it in America.

ugh, definately -EV, so tell me what you know about toothaches, and root canals

You don't feel a thing. Just make sure you are numb before they start drilling.

Although I was also one of those people who didn't feel anything after my wisdom teeth were gone (except of course the feeling that I am now stupid).

You sure you don't have a cavity that can be treated by a regular filling? A root canal is a last-resort kind of thing, and its better for your tooth not to have it done (it essentially kills the tooth by removing the nerve, which in the long run causes the tooth to be more brittle and more likely to crack and crumble as you get older).

That said, I have the worst luck with my teeth, and I recently had 2 root canals in a several month span. So long as they are generous with the novacaine, you should be ok and you shouldn't feel a thing. You may be a bit sore afterwards from having to keep your mouth so wide open for such a long period of time. If you do start to feel something during the operation, make sure you tell them, if they have already started drilling, sometimes they can inject more novacaine directly into the nerve.

The other annoying thing about a RC is that it is a several visit process. You will most likely end up with a crown (since a root canal makes the original tooth brittle). This will result in a total operation that requires probably 4-5 visits. (2-3 visits for the actual root canal, then a visit to have a temp crown put in while they order you a permanent crown based on measuerments, then a visit to put the permanent crown in).

Basically they shove a series of larger and larger needles up into your roots until all of the nerve endings are removed. I had one where I felt nothing and one where he couldn't quite get it numb. Still didn't suck that bad.
Edit: Both of these procedures were in one visit. There was a temporary crown until the next visit when I got my permanent crown. Total of 2 visits. I would kill a dentist who wanted to have 5 visits for a damn root canal.

They told me the same thing, yet it was total BS. I need some work done on myself, just can't get the free time to get it done.

Extra strength Bayer became my best friend over the last 6 months.

That's what I thought. They took xrays and said they didn't see anything. He gave me some meds and said I probably just had an infection and that was what was bothering me.

The meds did nothing and about 3 months later I went to a different dentist. As I siad before, I need some major work done. I have like 5 cavity's, need 1 root canal and also need my wisdom teeth extracted. I just haven't had time to get this crap done.
