Default opting out of collection pots

In games where collection pots are used to pay time, can you choose to opt out and just pay your own time? Why doesn't anyone do this? Is it considered poor form or something? Seems like it would be a big advantage at a tight table to just pay your own time. (This was specifically brought to mind by the 60/120 at Commerce, which alternated between disgustingly good and rock garden).

Sure you can opt out. I've never found it worth it in the games I play (ie no one plays any differently in a time pot, so taking advantages of everyone playing tighter than normal dosn't work).
