Default Staying in LA to grind at commerce?

I've just got back from my vegas trip and absolutly loved it.
Im planning to visit various major cities with famous casinos and grind/sight see..
Figured before I head back to vegas, LA was next on my list.

I looked at some hotels near the commerce and it appears the area is pretty dangerous.
For anyone with experience staying near the commerce, what do you recommend? Is a car rental required, or can I get by on cabs?
I do want to sight see LA and grind at the commerce almost daily...

If I stayed in a nice part of LA how long would it take to drive to commerce?

I've lived in LA for 20 years and play at the Commerce regularly. If a friend of mine were coming in from out of town to grind and sightsee, I'd recommend he stay at the Commerce and use that as his base from which to grind and sightsee. Commerce is an industrial area, but not unsafe and the Crowne Plaza hotel at the Commerce is pretty nice. You obviously won't have much to see in the City of Commerce itself, but it's easy to get on the freeway (the hotel is right off the 5 Freeway a major N/S freeway in LA) and get to major sightseeing points and it'll be easier to stumble back to the room after a long session late at night.

LA's a pretty big place with somewhat limited public transportation to/from the Commerce. Wherever you stay, you'll want to rent a car.

If you're looking for other card rooms to try, you can see most of the major ones here.

Comparision of LA cardrooms

Hope this helps.

Edmond

I just stayed in LA near Culver City with a friend for 3 days. Car rental at the airport (Fox) cost me $65 including taxes and fees. Daily rate was $17 or something like that. I found it through kayak.com but got the good rate of Fox website once directed there.

I wouldn't call Commerce "dangerous." Unless you feel in danger driving next to 18 wheelers. Stay at the Crowne Plaza and rent a car, as was stated. If you wanna sight see, the traffic would probably be best during the day or late at night. The 5 is absolutely atrocious during rush hour going both ways.

Depends on what you like. There's the Staples Center, Universal Citywalk, all those amusement parks, and of course Hollywood. Don't forget the beaches. A lot of good restaurants and nice buildings/architecture and museums as well. All this stuff is a decent drive(except for downtown stuff) from Commerce. I dunno what exactly you're interested in seeing though.

You forget to mention there is a In-n-Out burger a few miles down the road.

LA's got a lot going on, but its spread out all over the place. Gotta know what floats your before we can make recommendations.

Easy choices, Universal City Walk, Disneyland, etc. Venice Beach, a "hidden" park @ Coldwater and Mullholland that was used to film the intro to the Andy Griffith show. Food is everywhere and every kind. I forget which race track is open. etc. etc. etc. Peterson Automotive Museum.

What floats your boat? Besides poker.

QFT.

There is nothing walking distance from Commerce anyway, outside of that outlet mall 1/4 mile north on the frontage road.

The table food at Commerce is horrible. The resturants are pretty good. The Bike has better food, and a dynamite sushi resturant (for a card room).

Heisenberg, I can't help you with any info about LA or the Commerce. But if you do continue your journey and end up coming down to New Orleans, let me know.

Definitely don't come to NO to grind LHE, because they don't spread anything besides 3/6. (There are also casinos on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that sometimes -- but not consisently -- spread 10/20 or 15/30.) OTOH, the NLHE games in NO are GREAT and they spread 1/2 and 2/5 always, and usually 5/10. Also, I think New Orleans is a great city to visit and there's plenty to do and see here. (The city still is struggling with recovery from Hurricane Katrina, but the tourism industry has bounced back and you won't really even notice the effects of the hurricane unless you actively seek out the parts of the city that visitors rarely see.)

I'd stay at the crowne plaza. I stayed there for 2-3 weeks straight and it's really nice to be able to go downstairs and play any time. I also felt safe there and I'm not sure if I could say that about another hotel in the area, especially one that may or may not have a safe
