Default futbol/soccer sim games - help a noob

i'm interested in purchasing a futbol management sim game, but first i had a couple questions

i am american, so i don't really know how club futbol and delegations and transfers and all that stuff really works, but i want to. is it going to be impossible for me to play one of these games or will i be able to learn?

what else do you do in these games besides make roster moves?

are the games realistic? in fifa 06 i could take an MLS team and turn them into a crazy powerhouse just by maxing out my scout. i didn't like that.

i have no clue what game i want, so if you could suggest one i'd greatly appreciate it.

Fm 2007 no debate at all.The best sports game ever. The series has consistently been the best management game by miles.

Go here www.sigames.com

You will not blast a team up the ranking in this game without being very good. It's a very complex game

Also the learning curve is a bitch but well worth it if you keep at it.

You should be able to work out the transfer rules pretty easily they vary from country to country and FM has many playable nations so the manual is a little slim and you may need to use the internet.

As manager you’re responsible for appointing scouts and coaches you set the scout search criteria and the coaches training schedule, these affect which players you will find and how the players you have will develop. Buying players and negotiating their wages. Setting the teams tactics for match day then changing them during the match if things aren’t going your way. Half time and end of match team talks which affect motivation and talking to the media which again affects the teams motivation and confidence in you.

As a long time fan of the series id say its become a little easy but you basically set the difficulty buy your choice of starting team. Select Chelsea and you have unlimited spending power and a big name that top players will be willing to join, select Accrington Stanly and your broke with a name that people only remember from a 80s milk advert.

Championship manager used to be by far the best game of this type. I haven't played one of these for a while. I played the hell out of CM 99/00 but haven't since. I'm surprised CM is not only no longer on top according to the posts above, but not even worth mentioning because another game is clearly better.

I'm pretty sure FM07 is made by the same guys that did the old CM games.

It is, there was a split between developer and publisher. Sports interactive got the game engine and player data base but publisher Eidos got the name Championship Manager. Eidos still publish Championship Manager games using a new engine and Sport Interactive use the old engine under the name Football Manager.

I'm in basically the same situation as OP: an american who doesn't know much about soccer/ football. I bought FM07 ~ 6 months ago and it's a great game. Very addicting. It's not very hard at all to figure out the transfer rules, etc. of the league that you're playing in. I highly recommend it.
