Default Been awhile...Line Check Please

Live 5/5 game
Game is playing preety fast and loose with lots of raises and multiway action.

Effective stacks 1k

Villain raises to 40 in MP. Normally he plays pretty tight and very ABC post flop, but he is stuck and really trying to splash around so read isn't as airtight. Cutoff and button call and Hero calls with 4c 4s in BB.

(165) 6d 4d 3c...Hero checks?? Not sure if that is my first mistake, but I was preety sure villain would bet. Who likes a lead here and if so how much??? Villain bets 90 and folds back to me. Since we checked, what is a good amount to C/R to??

280?

This is a really simple hand. You can lead if you want but if you think he will bet most of the time I prefer a check as there are 2 players sandwiched between pfr and you.

I like a check for the reason that he may bet and get calls by the sandwiched players. Now I raise to at least $275 to start building the pot.
