Please excuse my ignorance but.................................
In 'Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big With Expert Play', in the Pre Flop tight chart, I'm confused. In late position, the chart seems to recommend playing 87s-54s (that does mean from and to, does it?), and playing QJs-T9s against a raise. Do we not play K8s-K2s then? Or have I missed something?
I am trying to move on in the book but this keeps pulling me back. Thanks for any help. |

Re: Please excuse my ignorance but.................................
Yep it does mean from and to. ie 87s, 76s, 65,s etc.
Trouble is with hands like K8s against a raise, is that they are easily dominated by AK, KQ, etc. The chart is advocating playing suited connectors in large multiway-pots. If you think about it, what good hand is K2s likely to make? The only thing going for it is that it is suited. It makes a useless TP hand and is in no way connected. Rather than just learning the charts- spend plenty of time reading the adjacent section that explains how the charts are derived. |

Re: Please excuse my ignorance but.................................
Sometimes the worst thing that could happen is you bet that K-8 and you hit the king on the flop. Your kicker is so weak against another king, you could end up losing a lot of chips playing that king. The only time that king will be playable for you post flop is if the king and kicker pair the board, or your kicker hits a set.

Thank you for that. Things are clearer now.
As I said though, I am trying to move on in the book but this kept nagging at me. I'm enjoyed what I've read so far. |

Re: Please excuse my ignorance but.................................
Make sure you understand the game conditions that these preflop recommendations are designed for. These loose, passive games were easy to find when SSH was published, but are hard to find now. The SSH "tight" game describes the $4/8 limit game at my local casino, but no higher. These games are hard to find online above the micro limits. With that said, SSH is a valuable book and understanding the concepts in it will help your play even if you don't play in those loose, passive games.

Thankyou, Eratosthenes, poker Plan and Sir Folds A Lot, for the help and advice. [/ QUOTE ] Just keep in mind that 2+2 is full of VERY, VERY good players (unfortunately, I'm not yet one of them!) - many of them are more than willing to help those who put the time in. Poker is a very, very tough game- especially on the emotions. I sincerely wish you all the best with it. |
