Help me win a sports prop bet
So my friend just emailed me this:
[ QUOTE ] OK, Dan. I was thinking about this last night, and have I got a prop bet for you. Since we both tied for second in the field day, I propose a decathalon or octathalon to determine the who is a better person out of the two of us. How it works is this: we pick 4 or 5 events each, for a total of 8 or 10, then we compete in those 8 or 10 events in a winner-take-all competition to determine the new King of Portland. Final rules to be determined, but my initial pass at the rules are: -Must be an physical competition (no poker playing) -You can pick events that will give you the advantage, (e.g you can pick the arm hang, bastard) -Must be an event that both people can do right now (you can't pick motorcycle riding for me, and I can't have a dunking competition) -We will reveal the events to each other in the suspensful, tension building, method where we say one at a time back and forth and the people watching comment on our picks and ooh and aah in the background. "That was a dangerous pick for Seth. I really think Dan has a chance to pick up a steal here." -We then have the competition on one day about a month out (so we can train) And we bet like $50 on it. To make it real. Seth [/ QUOTE ] Hmmmm.... I think it's an interesting bet, but I need help coming up with events I can win. I can definitely win the arm-hang, and any sort of distance running event. But Seth has a big size advantage on me (6'4", 220 versus 6'1" 180) so he will have the advantage in all throwing events and some other strength events. Here are the ones I know about. Basketball: We're pretty even. He will win about 60%... not sure if that's enough of an advantage for him to pick it as an event. Might be too much of a wild card. Ping pong: He dominates me and will probably pick this as one event. Pool: We both suck. Soccer Kick: I beat him at this recently, but not by a whole lot. Probably a risky pick for me. Home Run Derby: He dominates at this. Softball toss: He dominates. Arm Hang: I dominate. Sprint events: Close. He tends to get a better start than me and wins shorter sprints (40 yard dash), but I think I could take him in a full 100m. Distance running: I dominate. Maybe I could pick something really awful, like a 10-mile race, to tire him out for the entire competition. Horse: Close. He has a number of specialty trick shots; I'm a deadeye distance shooter. Not sure if he will pick this. Tennis: I'm pretty bad... no idea if he can play or not. Bowling: Probably too close to call. If anything he has a slight advantage. Racquetball: Wild card. Neither of us plays. Bench Press: I used to be able to bench press more weight than him, but he has gained weight since then, and I stopped lifting. We have a month to train, but this could be a risky pick. Anyone have other ideas for events that would favor a smaller, faster guy? |

Re: Help me win a sports prop bet
Also, if you have more endurance than him, and you are allowed to pick the order in which your events are competed in, pick a very long distance event and put it first in order.

[/ QUOTE ] I emailed him about this; he is claiming that I can only pick an event he can "do now," meaning up to 3 miles. He says he "can't" run 15 miles. Hmmmm. |

Be creative.
Go to a bar and hold a contest to see who can be the first to make out with a girl, ANY GIRL. But you can't tell the girl what's going on, and no money may change hands. This is a test of baller-ness, and seeing how low you will go to win a prop bet. |

[/ QUOTE ] Tell him your wrist is hurt and you "can't" play ping-pong then, or some other event he'll dominate you in. When he calls you out on it, tell him to stop being such a sally and run 10 miles or whatever. |

[/ QUOTE ] the key to this is also making it a distance that is long, but short enough that he'll actually attempt. Also, when running in it, dont demoralize him where he'll just drop out, but try to push him as much as you can while acting like you can barely beat him to get him to exert maximum effort. The more you can wear him out in this event the better it will bode for you in other events. 10 events in one day is a lot harder than people think. We just had a similar event among the track coaches where we all picked one event. So we ended up doing triple jump(my choice), 110 hurdles, 800m, and discus. All 4 of us had competed in college track and we were all dead by the end of just those 4 events, and we're all young and in pretty good shape. |

Swimming, both sprint and distance.
Indoor rock climbing, who can do the hardest grade. High diving, and you have to dive, not jump. Lots of people get up there and just freeze. Cycling, again chose sprint, distance, downhill etc. Backgammon. |
