Bankrolling for a friend
I am asking for some feedback in regards to bankrolling for a friend. I believe that he plays well, (live 3/6NL) and could make a living out of this. The only problem is that he is short of a healthy bankroll. I would like to provide to him, so that he can quit his job and concentrate on poker. Do you have any suggestions on how much of a bankroll he needs, and if I was to take a percentage of his winnings, what would be appropriate.
All thoughts are appreciated. Regards, Matt |

I
How good of a friend is he and how well do u trust him? So, you're staking him...hmm... Just because money can get in between friends, I think he should give you some sort of collateral or some way where he can't just take your money and run or other complications. I think staking can be very profitable; I would say split his winnings 50/50, and also set out ground rules like never lose more than 10% of ur roll in one day unless ur in the fishiest/easiest game in the world. This way, his stake will last the longest and positive variance will have time to kick in even if he runs bad at first becuz he'll have the roll to stand it. IMO, have ur friend scout out the poker games first tho to c which ones r the juiciest (even tho most live games r juicy) to maximize profit.

also a simple rule in life never lend money to family or friends if they need money then give it to them but dont expect it back [/ QUOTE ] This is true. But staking someone is different because you know going in that if he drops your stake he owes you nothing. Decide if it's worth the investment. If it is, do it. If you're just doing it to help him out, don't do it. He has to be substantially +ev over a long period of time for it to be a good gamble on your part and he needs at least 20 buy-ins for a live game imo. |

playing poker for a living is more than just being good at poker [/ QUOTE ] very true. this is not to say don't help your friend out, but dont spend money that you could be better investing in your own career. if an investment in a bankroll for your friend would be both a profitable investment (or at least breakeven), and a generous and positive gesture to your friend, then go for it. just be sure that it doesnt get between you and your friend outside of the poker world if it goes poorly. |
