was I wrong here?
the other day, I was playing $4-8, and i was not involved in the pot in question.
basically 4 people make it to the river and check it down. there had been some flop betting, the pot was small-medium sized. anyways nobody wants to showdown their hands, guy to my left shows J-7 for a pair of sevens, and the guy to my right looks at his cards up high. I see his hand, he has A-J for a pair of Aces but it about to muck. I tell him "you have the hand". he looks confused and then flips his hand. the dealer calls a pair of Aces and pushes him the pot. the guy says "thanks, I thought he had two pair". some guy at the table says "sir you shouldnt do that. you shouldn't do that unless he flips his cards." now i don't say anything back because i don't really care what he thinks and i'm not a fan of poker table arguments. but did he have a point? guy clearly flashed me A-J and i felt i was doing the right thing. i try to keep the game friendly. |

Re: was I wrong here?
Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but unless he tables his cards it's still his responsibility to see. If he tables and somehow everyone misses it then I think it's okay to point out.

Re: was I wrong here?
Until the cards are tabled... one player to a hand.
Once he tables them, then the entire table has the responsibility to see the best hand gets the pot. |

Re: was I wrong here?
I would berate you... sorry, but if I guy can't read his hand as a winner, and he doesn't know to turn over his cards... he doesn't deserve the pot.
I never say anything about anyone elses hand (even if they are turned over / tabled) unless I make it to the showdown. |

Re: was I wrong here?
Yes, you were very wrong--that's a pretty serious oops. DO NOT help someone read his hand until he tables it. On the other hand, once a hand is face up on the table, by all means correct the dealer and players if they all read it wrong.

Re: was I wrong here?
The guy is in the middle of making a decision, i.e. whether or not to muck his hand or flip his cards. You (or anybody else) cannot help him make a decision during a hand.
Once he flips his cards over, he is done with his decisions and you can help point things out if people have it wrong. |

Re: was I wrong here?
Yes, he had a point. His hand wasn't tabled so it wasn't a winner so basically, you took the pot from the other guy. Everyone is responsible for reading their own hands - one player per hand is a very basic rule of poker.

[ QUOTE ] but did he have a point? guy clearly flashed me A-J and i felt i was doing the right thing. [/ QUOTE ] You're kidding, right? You screwed up. Big. Old days you might've gotten a beat down for this in some of the seedier rooms. Until the hand is tabled, one player to a hand. Cards speak is only attached after it's tabled. [ QUOTE ] i don't say anything back because i don't really care what he thinks, and i'm not a fan of poker table arguments. [/ QUOTE ] Maybe you should care. You might learn something that might not start a major argument. I'm suprised that the losing hand handled it this well. b |

Re: was I wrong here?
This happened at Foxwoods recently in a 10/20 LHE game and the guy who illicitly helped out talked back to the guy who lost the pot. I jumped in and asked him if he wanted to be instructed by the floor. He mumbled something about instructing me. So in a very loud angry voice I told him if he was playing with somebody who was deaf, dumb, and blind he still couldn't help them and if he said another word back to me I would call the floor over. He was very quiet.
Later I asked the floor what she would have done. She told me that it was a very serious violation and the player would be given one warning and the second time it happened would be banned from the poker room. |
